Non-Degree / Dates: 21 July - 1 August 2025
This course provides evidence-based strategies for preventing, responding to, and recovering from school violence, with a focus on engaging students, staff, and the broader community. Participants will explore universal, targeted, and intensive interventions to enhance school safety. The course will help participants analyze the causes and risk factors of school violence, apply different levels of interventions, and develop strategies to improve both psychological and physical safety within school environments.
The course introduces the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to guide universal (Tier 1), targeted (Tier 2), and intensive (Tier 3) prevention strategies. Topics include school climate, trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, de-escalation techniques, restorative justice, and individualized interventions like Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
Participants will also learn how to identify at-risk students, conduct environmental scans, use anonymous reporting systems, and respond effectively to crises. Through real-life case studies and a final capstone scenario, the course equips learners to strengthen both the psychological and physical safety of school environments.
