Would you like to get an introduction to the practice of interpreting in different settings? If yes, then this course is for you! Theoretical part will include the history of interpreting, main interpreting modes and ethical issues. Students will be introduced to different techniques and strategies which can be adopted in different interpreting contexts.
Students will receive guidance for developing main interpreting skills of active listening, analysing, processing and reformulation and will know the difference between different modes, types and methods of interpreting in various settings.

Teacher(s)
Jekaterina Maadla holds an MA in Conference Interpreting from Tallinn University. She has completed Training for Interpreting Trainers at the Directorate for Interpretation at the European Commision and studied International Relations at Estonian School of Diplomacy. During her long career of more than 10 years as a freelance conference interpreter she has worked for the President and the Prime-Minister of Estonia, during the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU and mediated a number of high-level intergovernmental negotiations. She serves as an interpreter at Estonian Police and Border Guard Board and has trained interpreters with Russian and English languages at Tallinn University since 2018.

From Monday to Friday:

11:30 – 11:50 Break
11:50 – 13:00 Practical assignment and feedback
Day 1: Introduction. Different modes and types of interpreting. Ethical dilemmas.
Day 2: Introduction into public speaking. Speech structure. How to develop the ability to talk about any given topic fluently and convincingly?
Day 3: How to mediate communication? Understanding the speaker using active listening skills and content analysis. Memory exercises. Identifying relationships between ideas and ensuring accurate delivery.
Day 4: Consecutive interpreting. Introduction into note-taking. Main rules and methods.
Day 5: Sight translation, shadowing and other practical tasks to develop interpreting skills. Quality assessment.
Participants
The participant should have good knowledge of English and interest in the practical part of interpreting.
Credit points
1 ECTS
In order to get the summer school certificate, students have to participate in at least 85% of the classes and fill in a short questionnaire on the topics of the instruction at the end of the course.
