Estonia is situated in northeastern Europe on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is bordered to the east and southeast by Russia and to the south by Latvia. As the northernmost of the three Baltic States, Estonia offers visitors the chance to see a country that is both part of the former Soviet Union and a proud member of the European Union. Buildings from the Middle Ages, beautiful natural parks, unspoiled beaches and many islands just off the coast are just some of the attractions that Estonia has to offer.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is a historic city dating back to medieval times and was first mentioned in 1154. On the very first encounter, Tallinn emerges as a place of lights, colours, shadows and reflections, living in an almost magical Middle Ages milieu. The jewel of the crown is its medieval city, otherwise known as the Old Town. At its historic heart is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and buildings from the Middle Ages along ancient alleyways.

The Old Town is in magnificent condition – with the ancient city walls complete and fairytale towers, visitors can still stroll through the streets of the Old Town, wandering past the same churches, squares, towers, and rows of peaked and gabled houses as people did centuries ago.

In the centre of this old city centre a modern university is located – Tallinn University. Tallinn University’s main strengths lie in the fields of the humanities and social sciences, but it also has a strong and constantly growing component of natural and exact sciences, as well as a notable tradition of teacher training and educational research. The university’s summer school has achieved a notable reputation and has become the academic highlight of the Estonian summer. In 2010, the university has launched Tallinn Winter School.

Since 2006, Tallinn University has organised an International Summer School every July. Taking place in the most beautiful time of the year, Tallinn Summer School offers a 3-week programme, which includes several courses in various fields and provides a fascinating cultural programme that includes recreational trips. The summer courses are designed in a way that gives students a chance to get a taste of the university’s degree courses, but also offers outstanding specialists an opportunity to present Estonia to a wider audience. The school’s ambiance is always casual and relaxed, while still concentrating on a scholastic approach.

The most important aspect of Tallinn Summer School is to bring together a diverse array of students from all over the world to stimulate and encourage innovative discussion and debate. Every year more than 300 people from around 50 different countries gather in Tallinn to take part in the courses, recreational workshops and active student life. Top quality lecturers, interesting tourist attractions, lively receptions, weekend trips – all carefully selected and designed for students and summer school participants – the entire event is “Positively Surprising!” The school will guide and support you through this exciting experience.

In 2017, the first courses will start on the 10th of July and all courses will end on the 28th of July. The programmes are accredited, and participants can include the credits earned in their own degree programme. The language of instruction is English. At the end of your studies, we also offer you the chance to join the trip to St. Petersburg with the option of continuing to Moscow.
